Lost in translation with all the tech community jargon? What do these fancy titles even mean?
Here's the 101 for you. 👉
Microsoft Most Valuable Professional
Microsoft Most Valuable Professional, or MVPs, are individual experts who actively share their technical knowledge with other members of the community. They write, speak, build, contribute to open source, and support the global tech community without being asked. Each award is granted for one year and must be re-earned annually. It’s not a certification or training badge. It’s recognition for doing the hard work of knowledge-sharing, consistently, voluntarily, and publicly.
Microsoft Regional Director
Roughly 150 RDs exist globally. They are trusted advisors with strong technical and business knowledge, recognized for their ability to bridge deep technical expertise with real-world business impact. RDs are handpicked for their influence, strategic thinking, and ability to connect technical communities with Microsoft leadership. Unlike MVPs, RDs are not limited to a single technology focus. They often have a broader impact across organizations, industries, and regions. The RD program is invitation-only and based on peer and Microsoft nominations.
Azure MVP
Azure MVPs are recognized for their deep knowledge of Microsoft Azure and their ability to help others succeed on the platform. This can include architecture, migration, cloud-native development, governance, and performance optimization. These are the people writing the blog post you googled at 11:30 p.m. when your deployment pipeline broke.
AI Platform MVP
These MVPs focus on Microsoft’s AI stack; including Azure OpenAI, Machine Learning, Cognitive Services, and responsible AI practices. They not only explore what’s possible but share real guidance on what’s feasible, secure, and valuable in production.
Developer Technologies MVP
Focused on the craft of software development from modern architecture and APIs to testing, CI/CD, and developer experience. These MVPs are practitioners who raise the bar for how code is written, deployed, and maintained.
