Internet of Things or industrial internet describe a world, where devices and their sensors communicate with other applications. Microsoft Azure provides several services for creating, managing and securing a distributed solution like this.
In an IoT solution Microsoft Azure either receives data packets or communicates with devices bi-directionally, after which the received messages will be analyzed, routed, enriched and aggregated until they are stored into a fit-for-purpose data storage solution (see also Data Platform). A ‘dashboard’ or other visual solutions are often built based on the data, where the health or process stages of a device are visualized.
Usually in IoT solutions Azure services such as Azure IoT Hub / Event Hubs, Azure Stream Analytics, Azure Functions, Time Series Insights, Azure Databricks and various Azure data storage solutions are leveraged. The services provide partially overlapping functionality, which makes it important to have experience using the services.
